Will Fat Make You Fat? Put The Blame Where It Belongs!

Will fat make you fat? This is a question I hear all the time. Evidence that the food pyramid doesn't work and that rhetoric does!

The advertising and rhetoric we see every day has led us to believe that fat, even healthy fats, makes you fat.

Here's what you need to know about that:

Will Fat Make You Fat? Fat Vs. Carbohydrates

Gram for gram, fat has more calories than protein and carbohydrates.

If we consume more calories than we burn, we'll gain weight, right? But, replacing fat with high carbohydrate foods leads to increased sugar and insulin responses that drive fat storage.

This leads to weight gain, more hunger and cravings. This is because low-fat high-carb foods are not satisfying for very long like fats and proteins are. So you'll end up eating more. Them, when you do eat, the carbohydrates spike blood sugar levels with an ensuing insulin response. Insulin is a fat hormone telling your body to store the excess energy as fat.

Will Fat Make You Fat? Satiating Effects

Eating foods that contain fat and protein make you feel fuller for longer and we won't get the cravings and helps to avoid overeating.

So, we won't get too many calories in a day if we don't over eat. We won't over eat if we get enough healthy fats and proteins with a lower carbohydrate diet.

A low carb diet will reduce the blood sugar swings from the spikes and insulin response crashes. This stabilizes food cravings and hunger also resulting in lower food consumption and improved overall health.

Will Fat Make You Fat? No!

All this being said, no, fat will not make you fat. Fat is an important part of your diet and healthy fats promote vitality, health and strength.

A great way to get the healthy fats you need and reduce your carbohydrate intake to stabilize your weight and promote optimum health is a Paleo Diet approach. This is a natural way and easy way to get all the balances right without the hard work of calorie counting and trying to avoid certain fats or high calorie foods.

Some of my favorite sources of healthy fats are:

  • Avocados
  • Nuts and seeds such and pumpkin seeds and almonds
  • Organic grass fed meats which contain excellent levels of omega 3's and lower saturated fat than conventional meats
  • Wild caught fish
  • Olive oil
  • Coconut oil

Enjoy these and other healthy high fat foods and enjoy your health! And, your taste buds will thank you as well! No more rice crackers!!!
